Art Cycle On display April – September

  • Art Cycle will invite several regional artists to construct outdoor public sculptures out of recycled bicycle parts.  Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st place, 2nd place and People’s Choice.  The sculptures will be unveiled in mid- April and will remain on display with a self-guided tour in downtown Spartanburg through September. Art Cycle is a project of the Spartanburg Creative Energy, City of Spartanburg, Partners for Active Living and Hub-Bub.

Spartanburg Downtown Criterium Friday, April 30

Featuring Kid’s Bike Rodeo with Safe Kids of Spartanburg and Team Spartanburg’s Kids’ Bike Race

  • The downtown criterium is a pro cycling race on a closed-circuit, multi-lap course know for its drastic high speeds and tight racing packs.   It will be a featured event in Spartanburg’s largest annual festival, Spring Fling, and included in the USA CRITS Speed Week series, which is guaranteed to draw top national racing teams and international racers.  The downtown criterium has an officially sanctioned, half-mile course that is unique for its cobblestone start/finish line, open-air plaza center, and dangerously sharp right turns.

Stump Jump Sunday, May 2

  • The 13th Annual Stump Jump is the USAC-MTN South Carolina State qualifying race for the USAC-MTN Nationals.  It is held at Croft State Park (Southside Trail) in Spartanburg, SC each year.  This event is hosted by Spartanburg Parks Commission.

Yoga for Cyclists TBD

  • Relax your mind, body and soul with free yoga classes led by a local certified instructor.  These sessions will focus on the primary muscles and joints used by cyclists. Classes will take place at the Weisiger Center at Converse College. This event is made possible by Yoga Open Heart Studio.  More details will be posted at soon!

Bike to School Day Friday, May 7

  • Select schools in Spartanburg County will participate in the national Bike to School Day event. Children and their parents are encouraged to bike to school to celebrate active transportation and remedying traffic congestion and polluted air around schools.

Bicycle Beauty Pageant Saturday, May 8

  • Spartanburg’s youth are encouraged to decorate and show-off their two-wheeled beauties at the Hub City Farmers’ Market’s opening day on May 8. Participants will parade roughly one mile from Morgan Square to the Magnolia Train Station where their decorated bicycles will be judged and awards will be given. This event is hosted by Hub City Farmers Market and Partners for Active Living.

Upstate Ride of Silence Wednesday, May 19

  • The Ride of Silence is an international event hosted in cities and towns around the world honoring injured and killed cyclists.  The ride is 10 miles at a pace no faster than 10 mph lead by members of Foothills Cyclists, Freewheelers of Spartanburg and Greenville Spinners.

Pedal with Your Politician Friday, May 21

  • This 4th annual event brings together elected officials and Spartanburg citizens for a short community bike ride.  The event recognizes National Bike to Work Week and helps to encourage continued support for bicycle-friendly policies among the community’s political leaders.  More information to be posted soon!

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day Saturday, May 22

  • An International Mountain Bicycling Association event which first occurred in Spartanburg in October 2009. Kids and their families are invited out for a day of mountain biking on the Cottonwood Trail.  Learn mountain biking basics, complete the skills course and ride on either the beginner or advanced course. This event will take place at SPACE’s Edwin M. Griffin Nature Preserve off of Woodburn Road. A limited number of bicycles and helmets will be available. TKMBD is hosted by Partners for Active Living and Spartanburg Parks Commission.

Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Marion Monday, May 24

Classic Bike Expo and guest speaker at the Spartanburg Auditorium at registration on Sunday, May 23.

  • Freewheelers of Spartanburg will host the 35th Annual Assault on Mount Mitchell and, its shorter counterpart, the 17th Annual Assault on Marion.  The event includes a 102-mile climb to the highest point east of the Mississippi River and a 72-mile climb to the town of Marion, NC.  Close to 2,000 bicyclists from around the country will test their endurance and abilities to complete this journey.

Lunchtime Bike Rides Every Friday in May

  • Meet at the Mary Black Foundation offices at 349 East Main Street with your bicycle and helmet. This leisurely ride leaves at 12:10 pm and follows the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail to the Duncan Park neighborhood, where the group rides two to three laps around the three-mile loop. The group returns together by 1:00 pm.  Bikes will be provided upon prior arrangement by the Spartanburg Parks Commission.

Bike Commuter Classes TBD

  • Get yourself in gear!  Nationally certified cycling instructors are offering a course on commuting by bicycle.  This course will teach practical tips for keeping both your bike and yourself in shape. (More details will be posted soon!

Hub City Ride and Stride Tour                                                                             TBD

  • Take a tour of Hub City’s newest bicycle facilities on this beginner level, 6-mile bicycle rideabout through downtown.  Or, take it down a notch and enjoy Spartanburg by foot on a leisurely 3 mile walk. More information to be posted soon!
