Becoming Bicycle Friendly

In the fall of 2004, numerous nonprofit groups, government agencies, and private sponsors and supporters joined together to launch the Bike Town Initiative. The overarching goal of the program was to earn the designation as a Bicycle-Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. Since then, Partners for Active Living and its Bike Town partners have been working diligently to make progress in each of the League of American Bicyclists’ five major areas of concern: Engineering, Evaluation, Enforcement, Education, and Encouragement.

In the three years that the Bike Town Spartanburg program has been underway, both small steps and giant leaps have been taken to bring our community closer and closer “Bicycle-Friendly Community” status. In the fall of 2006, the City of Spartanburg earned an honorable mention from the League. Our efforts since then have paid off…

On September 25th, 2007, the League of American Bicyclists named the City of Spartanburg the FIRST Bicycle-Friendly Community in the state of South Carolina!

Thanks to the City of Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, the Spartanburg Area Transportation Study, South Carolina Department of Transportation, Partners for Active Living, the Freewheelers of Spartanburg, the Foothills Cyclists, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, the Palmetto Cycling Coalition, Safe Kids, our local bike shops, and everyone else who helped to make this important award possible!
